PRODUCTS

The INDEEVA product line consists of three easy-to-apply products designed specifically to treat chronic pain. The products are based on whole plant extracts to ensure our patients receive the most effective treatment as indicated by scientific consensus.

Two centuries ago morphine was commercialized after it was extracted from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). This signified the first time mankind was able to identify, isolate, and concentrate the medicinal component from its source plant. This ushered in a new approach in Western medicine, reflecting the scientific reductionist approach from which it was borne. Where before doctors (or healers) used whole plants, containing the complete spectrum of compounds, to treat a condition, now it used only the molecule it determined had therapeutic value in a concentrated form.

Of course this novel paradigm of using a single, concentrated compound is completely valid, and has gifted mankind incredible advances in medicine. In the majority of cases it bears a more effective therapeutic outcome, and often eliminates other undesirable and toxic compounds. However, as with all human endeavours of ineffable complexity, such as modern medicine and drug development, it is pays to prevent the norm from becoming the rule.

As Cannabis sativa became integrated into the modern Western pharmacopoeia it inevitably followed this same trajectory. By the 1960’s, what was then believed to be its sole medical component, the cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, was identified by two young Israeli researchers. A couple of years later the first synthetic, single-molecule version of this compound hit the market as a capsule. Called dronabinol, it was immediately hailed by the medical establishment to finally allow them to administer the therapeutic value of cannabis, while simultaneously allowing them to circumvent all the baggage associated with it.

Though the medical establishment and healthcare agencies had great hopes, the patient community did not reflect this enthusiasm. Individuals who had tried both herbal cannabis (containing all the cannabinoids, major and minor, and terpenoids), as well as dronabinol (containing only synthetic delta-9-THC), reported that the latter fell well short of the therapeutic benefits imparted by the former.

Fortunately, the top scientists in the field were receptive to this patient consensus, and performed research into the matter. They postulated that the superior effects of whole plant cannabis may be due to synergistic interactions between its various medicinal compounds. This synergistic interaction leads to a lessening of side effects, and an enhancement of therapeutic effects. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, the Grand-Papa of cannabinoid research, who was the young Israeli researcher that discovered delta-9-THC, is himself a proponent of this idea which he dubbed “the entourage effect”. Ensuing scientific research on this matter has unanimously supported this idea, and today its acceptance pervades the scientific community.

This is why all INDEEVA’s products are formulated from natural, whole-plant extracts as the foundation. When science speaks, we take notice, when patients speak, we listen.

TRANSDERMAL PATCH

INDEEVA’s transdermal patch is a small patch placed on the skin that delivers its medicinal compounds over a prolonged period to provide unparalleled sustained relief from chronic pain symptoms.

Discrete and easy to apply, INDEEVA’s TD patch is the leading edge of transdermal technology. It is composed of novel biopolymers that hold numerous advantages over traditional transdermal technology, and leads to unprecedented efficacy in treating chronic pain.

SUBLINGUAL SPRAY

INDEEVA’s sublingual spray is a cannabinoid-based solution that is contained in a discrete spray bottle with an easy-to-use nozzle. The solution is sprayed under the tongue using the nozzle, whereafter it rapidly diffuses into the bloodstream. As opposed to the slow-release nature of the transdermal patch, this leads to a more rapid onset and pronounced effect. It is especially useful during episodes of severe pain to allow the user to self-titrate on demand to enhance the therapeutic effect of the transdermal patch. Alternatively, it may also be used on its own.

TOPICAL OINTMENT

INDEEVA’s topical ointment is a non-greasy and non-fragrant formula that is soothing to painful and inflamed skin. While the transdermal patch provides sustained relief, and the sublingual spray addresses episodes of severe pain, INDEEVA’s topical ointment is designed to specifically target pain, soreness, and inflammation in the periphery.

Application could not be simpler, the ointment is simply applied to the targeted area and left to slowly absorb into the skin where it binds to the appropriate receptors to elicit a therapeutic response. It is a safe and handy product that works effectively by itself, or in combination with INDEEVA’s other products.

IS MEDICAL CANNABIS SAFE?

Medical cannabis is a safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions when used responsibly. It has safely been used by mankind for thousands of years and has been available for 15 years in Canada as part of the MMAR, MMPR, and now the ACMPR. During this time it has been used by thousands of patients to effectively treat their conditions without a single serious reported adverse effect.

In pharmaceutical sciences we quantify the safety of a drug as the ratio of the amount of drug needed for a therapeutic effect to the amount of drug that will lead to an overdose death. The most dangerous drug on this list is heroin, while medical cannabis, without a single reported overdose death in the history of mankind, is always rated as the safest.

Patient safety is one of the most important considerations at INDEEVA. Our production adheres to stringent quality control standards and each product is thoroughly tested for a range of possible contaminants. INDEEVA is committed to providing its clients with the most effective, and safest products available on the market.

IS USING THE INDEEVA PATCH SIMILAR TO SMOKING CANNABIS?

There are distinct differences between smoking cannabis and using our transdermal patch due to the difference in the way the cannabinoids are delivered into the bloodstream.

Smoking is harmful to the respiratory system, and is a poor choice for treating chronic pain. All the cannabinoids contained within the plant material is inhaled and moves across the lungs into the bloodstream within a matter of minutes. This means that there is a huge “rush” of cannabinoids into the blood, leading to the classical psychoactive feeling associated with cannabis - in other words feeling high. The body then quickly compensates for this high level by removing the cannabinoids from the bloodstream and rapidly you will no longer have any beneficial therapeutic effect.

Conversely, with the transdermal patch there is no sudden or large amount of cannabinoids entering into the bloodstream at any one time. Rather, cannabinoids slowly “seep” across the skin providing a sustained delivery of cannabinoids into the bloodstream. This means one never gets high, and thus one is able to function normally.

The cannabinoids are consistently released into the bloodstream over an extended period, which means you will receive therapeutic relief for much longer than you would with smoking - up to 24 hours.

WHAT ARE CANNABINOIDS?

Cannabinoids are the medicinal compounds produced by Cannabis sativa. They are responsible, along with terpenoids, for the therapeutic effects of the plant. The two most well known cannabinoids, sometimes referred to as the major cannabinoids, are called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The amount of these two compounds are clearly stated on all of our products.

“In adults with chronic pain patients who were treated with cannabis or cannabinoids are more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms.”

THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF CANNABIS AND CANNABINOIDS REPORT by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

“Treatment options for neuropathic pain have limited efficacy and use is fraught with dose-limiting adverse effects… Exogenous cannabinoids have been demonstrated to be effective in a range of experimental neuropathic pain models, and there is mounting evidence for therapeutic use in human neuropathic pain conditions.”

DR. PERRY FINE MD AND DR. MARK J. ROSENFELD PHD. University of Utah

“Use of cannabis as a medicine for numerous conditions has a well-documented history stretching back thousands of years. With the identification of an endogenous system of receptors and ligands in recent years (ECS), abundant experimental data have reinforced the anecdotal claims of people who perceive medical benefit fromthe currently illegal consumption of cannabis. This, combined with data from recent clinical trials, points to the prospect of cannabis as a medication in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and numerous other medical conditions.”
